Technical product data was never designed for AI agents

Electrical, HVAC and plumbing distribution built some of the best product-data infrastructure in wholesale. It was built for catalogs, estimating and EDI. Contractors' AI assistants ask a different question: the right part, at a branch, today.

DIRECTIONA future direction. No present-tense capability claim.

The stack is real

Electrical. IDEA, the joint venture of NAED, NEMA and NEMRA, says IDEA Connector is used by over 1,000 manufacturer brands and 8,000 distributor locations.

Cross-trade classification. ETIM's HVAC and plumbing sector sits beside its electrotechnical one.

Plumbing. The trade got its first Product Data Standard from ASA on July 1, 2025. A distributor described the time before it: “One good file from Vendor A had to be rebuilt twelve different ways.”

Our read: classification and syndication are owned and association-backed. Nobody should rebuild them.

Where it stops

The branch. Contractors buy at the branch, often the same day. An Electro-Federation Canada study, on a Canadian sample, put 49% of contractor purchases at distributor branches. Syndication standards carry product and price, not branch stock or will-call readiness.

The match. AHRI certifies matched combinations of outdoor unit, coil and furnace, not components, as Trane describes it. An assistant that says “matched” without the certificate for that exact combination is guessing.

The certification. “Lead-free” means NSF/ANSI 372 or 61 Annex G, or California AB 1953, per an ASDWA and AWWA factsheet. WaterSense is a third-party certification with its own directory. Each lives outside the maker's catalog.

The cross-reference. A universal motor replaces several OEM motors. A retailer notes that “the OEM number sometimes maps to more than one revision”. A cross-reference is a claim by someone, and the answer should say who.

The stack describes the product. It stops before the branch, the match and the claim's author.

Who's building

The national majors are building their own: trade press reports Watsco runs Ask.Watsco and OnCallAir. Bluon's PartsConnect is reported to link technicians to compatible parts at participating distributors. Parspec is reported to automate spec-to-quote.

Our read: independents and regionals, mostly on Epicor Eclipse with association content, won't build an agent-facing layer of their own.

What we're building

One record per supply house: branches, counter hours, trades and lines; parts with ratings in their units; certifications with their issuer and number, and AHRI matches only for the exact certified combination; branch stock with its read time.

AI assistants can read it, and there's one action: a quote request your branch prices.

01 · Question
What does an assistant need from a supply house to answer a counter request, and where does the existing stack stop?
02 · Why it matters
These trades already have association-backed product data for classification and syndication. We read where that stack is strong and where it stops, against what a contractor's assistant would need at the counter, before building a supply-house record.
03 · State
DIRECTION A future direction. No present-tense capability claim.
04 · What we built or tested
  • A tested supply-house model in Lehvel's repo: branches, parts with rated values, certifications with issuer and number, AHRI matches only for the exact certified combination, and branch stock with its read time. No distributor's record is loaded.
  • Not live: any agent-facing tool or quote request for a supply house.
05 · Evidence
IDEA Connector (IDEA, reported)Used by over 1,000 manufacturer brands and 8,000 distributor locations.
Plumbing data standard (ASA)The trade's first Product Data Standard launched July 1, 2025.
Before the standard (Supply House Times)“One good file from Vendor A had to be rebuilt twelve different ways.”
Where contractors buy (Electro-Federation Canada, Canadian sample)49% of contractor purchases at distributor branches.

Lead-free (reported via ASDWA/AWWA)Means NSF/ANSI 372 or 61 Annex G, or California AB 1953.
WaterSense (EPA)A third-party certification with its own directory.
06 · What we learned
  • Classification and syndication are owned and association-backed. Nobody should rebuild them.
  • The stack stops at the branch. Syndication standards carry product and price, not branch stock or will-call readiness.
  • An assistant that says “matched” without the AHRI certificate for that exact combination is guessing.
  • Certifications live outside the maker's catalog, each with its own issuer.
  • A cross-reference is a claim by someone, and the answer should say who.
  • Our read: independents and regionals, mostly on Epicor Eclipse with association content, won't build an agent-facing layer of their own.
07 · Limitations
  • Several items are reported, not read at the primary source: IDEA's usage figures, AHRI via Trane, lead-free via ASDWA/AWWA, the SupplyHouse cross-reference note, and the Watsco, Bluon and Parspec items.
  • The 49% branch figure comes from a Canadian sample.
  • No distributor's record is loaded, so the model hasn't met a real catalog or ERP.
08 · What changes next
Build it with one regional HVAC or multi-trade supply house first.
Negative results are published as results. A state on this page is a claim about what is true today, not about what is planned; a limitation is a limitation.
