How to choose a website development company

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Choosing a website development company comes down to what happens after the site launches. Ask who owns the domain, design, content and code once you've paid, who updates the site and how, how old pages will be redirected, and what you get if you leave. The quality of the design matters, but those answers decide what it costs you later.

Questions to ask

  • Once I've paid, who owns the domain, the design, the content and the code?
  • Who makes changes after launch, how fast, and what does it cost?
  • Where is it hosted, and who handles security updates and backups?
  • How will you redirect my old pages so search traffic isn't lost?
  • Can I see two or three sites you built that are still live, and talk to those owners?

Red flags

  • The company registers your domain in its own name.
  • A proprietary system you can't take with you.
  • No plan for your current site's URLs.
  • A proposal full of pages and features, with nothing about who keeps it current.

How we handle it

When Lehvel builds a site, the customer owns the content, design and code once the build fee is paid, and gets the files and a reasonable handoff if they cancel every recurring service. Changes after launch go through the Website Agent, in plain language.

Questions

Freelancer or agency?

Either can do good work. Ask both the same questions about ownership and upkeep.

How long should a small business website take?

It depends on how ready your content is. Photos, services and details are usually the slowest part.

Should I pick the cheapest proposal?

Compare what happens after launch, not just the build price.
