FAQ schema markup: is it still worth adding?

By · 2 min read · Updated

The short answer

FAQ schema markup still works as structured data, but since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. For most businesses it won't add dropdowns under your listing. It still labels questions and answers clearly for search engines and AI tools. Add it only where the questions and answers are visible on the page.

How to add it

  1. Write the questions and answers on the page where customers can read them.
  2. Add FAQPage JSON-LD with the same text, word for word.
  3. Test the page in Google's Rich Results Test and fix any errors.

Rules that keep it valid

  • The answers must be yours, not user-submitted; forums use QAPage instead.
  • No advertising in answers.
  • Don't repeat the same FAQ block on every page.

Where it's worth it

Service pages with real questions customers ask, like whether you do weekends or how long a job takes. Every article on this site carries FAQ markup for that reason: the answers are useful whether or not Google draws a dropdown.

Questions

Does FAQ schema help rankings?

Not directly. It helps machines understand the page.

Do AI assistants read schema?

Some systems use structured data; all of them read the visible text, so write that well first.

Can I use a plugin?

Yes. Check the output matches your visible text.
