Google reviews vs Yelp: which matters more for a small business?

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

For most small businesses, Google reviews matter more, because they appear in Google Search and Maps, where most local customers look. Yelp still counts in some trades and cities, and its reviews show up in other apps. The practical difference: Google lets you ask customers for reviews, and Yelp asks businesses not to.

Where each one shows up

Google reviews sit on your Business Profile in Search and Maps, and review count and rating are part of what Google says makes a business prominent in local results.

Yelp reviews show on Yelp and have long appeared in other places, including Apple Maps. For restaurants, bars and some home services, plenty of customers still check Yelp first.

The rules are different

  • Google: you can ask every customer for a review, as long as you don't pay for it or ask only the happy ones.
  • Yelp: asks businesses not to request reviews at all, and its recommendation software hides reviews it isn't confident in, listing them as "not currently recommended".

Where to put your effort

Most of it on Google. Claim your Yelp page anyway, keep its details matching your Google profile, and reply to the reviews there, because people read those replies too.

Questions

Should I ask customers to review me on Yelp?

Yelp asks businesses not to. A "find us on Yelp" note is fine; a direct request isn't.

Why did my Yelp reviews disappear?

Usually Yelp's recommendation software moved them to "not currently recommended". They're still on the page, further down.

Do Yelp reviews affect my Google ranking?

Not directly. They matter to the customers who read them, and Yelp is one of the sources AI assistants may read.
