A WordPress website suits a small business that wants full control and the ability to move its site anywhere, and has someone to look after it. Self-hosted WordPress runs a large share of the web and can do almost anything with plugins, but updates, security and backups are your job, or your developer's.

Two different things called WordPress

  • WordPress.org: free software you install on hosting you choose. Full control, full responsibility.
  • WordPress.com: a hosted service built on it. Easier, with limits depending on the plan.

What it does well

  • Any kind of page, with the right theme or builder.
  • Plugins for forms, booking, SEO and schema.
  • Moving hosts whenever you like, keeping everything.

The upkeep

Core, theme and plugin updates arrive constantly, and an outdated plugin is one of the most common ways small sites get hacked. Someone needs to update, back up and check the site every month. If nobody will, a hosted builder or a managed service is safer.
