Zero-click searches: why clicks drop when rankings don't

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Zero-click searches are ones where the searcher gets what they need on the results page and never clicks through. AI summaries, map listings and quick answers all cause them. It's why your rankings can hold while website visits fall. For a local business, calls, direction requests and bookings are better measures than clicks.

Why clicks fall while rankings hold

Google answers more questions itself: an AI-written summary, a map pack with your phone number, a box with your hours. The searcher got what they needed without visiting a site.

Questions with a quick answer, like "how long does a water heater last", are the easiest for Google to answer itself. Someone ready to hire still has to call somebody.

What to measure instead

  • Your Google Business Profile's Performance view: calls, website clicks and direction requests from the listing.
  • Search Console impressions, to see whether you're still being shown.
  • Where new customers say they found you. "Google" now includes Maps and AI answers.

What to do about it

Make sure what's shown without a click is right: hours, phone, services. A zero-click result with the wrong number is worse than none. Then keep the pages that answer hiring questions strong: services, areas, how to book.

Questions

Can I turn off AI Overviews?

Not for your customers. A searcher can use the Web filter in Google to see plain links.

Are zero-click searches bad for small businesses?

Not always. A customer who calls straight from your map listing is a zero-click search that worked.

Does this affect Google Maps?

Maps was largely zero-click already. Calls and directions come straight from the listing.
