AI for SEO: what it's good at, and what Google says about it

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

AI for SEO is best as an assistant, not an author. It's good at brainstorming the questions customers ask, drafting page outlines, titles and meta descriptions, writing schema drafts and summarizing Search Console data. Google says AI-assisted content is fine when it's helpful, and treats mass-produced pages made to game rankings as spam.

Where AI helps

  • Listing the questions customers ask about a service, to check against your pages.
  • Drafting page outlines, titles and meta descriptions for you to edit.
  • Writing a first draft of local business schema.
  • Summarizing a Search Console export: which pages lost clicks, which searches grew.

What Google has said

Using AI to help write content isn't against Google's guidelines. Using automation to churn out pages mainly to manipulate rankings is, and Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse directly. The test is whether a page helps the person reading it.

Where it goes wrong

  • Invented facts: hours, prices, certifications you don't have.
  • Pages that could belong to any business in your trade.
  • Dozens of near-identical town pages.

Questions

Can ChatGPT do my SEO?

It can speed up parts of it. Someone still has to know the business, check facts and decide what's worth publishing.

Is AI SEO the same as optimizing for AI search?

No. This is using AI to do SEO work. Optimizing for AI search is about how assistants describe you.

Will Google penalize AI-written pages?

Not for being AI-assisted. It can demote pages that are unhelpful or mass-produced, however they were written.
