Google reviews points: how Local Guides points work

By · 2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Google reviews points come from Local Guides, Google Maps' contributor program. Reviewers earn points for reviews, ratings, photos and edits, and move up through ten levels. A written review earns more than a star rating alone. Points bring badges and early feature access, not money. Businesses can't offer rewards for reviews on top of them.

How points add up

  • Reviews earn the most, with a bonus for longer ones.
  • Photos and videos earn points each.
  • Ratings without text, answers to Maps questions and fact checks earn a little.
  • Edits and newly added places earn points once Google accepts them.

What it means for your business

A high-level Local Guide's review shows their level badge beside it, and some readers trust those more. That's a reason to welcome them, not to target them. The review policy is the same for everyone: no discounts, gifts or entries into draws in exchange for a review.

Questions

Can I see a reviewer's Local Guide level?

Yes. It shows under their name on the review.

Do points expire?

No, but Google can remove points for content it takes down.

Do Local Guides get paid?

No. The perks are badges and occasional offers from Google.
