How to set up Google Search Console for Squarespace

By · 2 min read · Updated

The short answer

To set up Google Search Console for Squarespace, open the Squarespace panel, go to Analytics, then Search keywords, and connect your Google account. Squarespace verifies the site and submits your sitemap, found at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. You can also verify manually in Search Console with a DNS record if you manage your own domain.

After connecting

  1. Open Search Console and confirm the sitemap shows as Success under Sitemaps.
  2. Check Pages for anything marked not indexed that should be.
  3. Wait a few days, then read Performance for the searches you appear for.

Squarespace quirks

  • Collection pages and tag pages can create near-duplicate URLs. Squarespace sets canonicals; leave them alone.
  • Pages hidden from navigation are still indexed unless you turn on the page's hide-from-search setting.
  • Changing a page URL doesn't redirect the old one. Add a URL mapping in Squarespace's developer tools.

Questions

Does Squarespace have its own search data?

Yes, a Search keywords panel that pulls from Search Console once connected.

Do I need Google Analytics too?

No. Search Console covers Google search; Squarespace Analytics covers visits.

How long before data shows?

Usually a few days after connecting.
