How to choose an SEO company for a small business

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

To choose an SEO company, ask what they'll do each month, what they'll report, who owns the website and listings if you leave, and how they'll measure calls and leads rather than rankings alone. Walk away from anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Google itself says nobody can.

Questions to ask

  • What exactly will you do in the first 90 days?
  • Will you work in my Google Business Profile, and will I stay its owner?
  • Who owns the website, content and accounts if I leave?
  • What will the monthly report show?
  • Can I talk to a current client in my kind of business?

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody can promise "page one in 30 days".
  • Dozens of town pages with only the town name changed.
  • Buying links or reviews.
  • Long contracts with no way out.

Is an SEO company worth it?

For a small local business, much of the value is upkeep: listings, reviews, a site that stays accurate. If you'll do that yourself, you may not need anyone. If you won't, the work still needs doing.

Questions

How much should SEO cost for a small business?

It varies widely by market and scope. Get a written scope before you compare prices.

Freelancer or agency?

Either can work. Ask both the same questions.

How soon should I see results?

Fixes to your profile and site are quick. Search results move on Google's schedule.
