Local citations and NAP consistency, explained

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Local citations are mentions of your business's name, address and phone number (NAP) on other sites: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, industry directories. Consistent citations help Google and AI assistants trust your details. Inconsistent ones, like an old number or a previous address, get repeated back to customers.

Where citations live

  • Bing Places for Business, which feeds Bing and Microsoft products.
  • Apple Business Connect, which feeds Apple Maps and Siri.
  • Yelp, Facebook and the BBB.
  • Industry directories such as Houzz, Angi, Avvo or Healthgrades, depending on the trade.
  • Data suppliers that feed many smaller directories.

Do they still matter?

As a ranking boost, most local SEO practitioners rate them lower than they did a decade ago. As a source of truth, they matter more. Assistants answering questions about local businesses read directories as well as your site, and repeat what they find.

When AI answers a question about a local business, 93% of the distinct websites it cites are business websites. (Source: BrightLocal Local AI Visibility Tracker, August 2026 — 116,670 domains cited across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT.)

How to clean them up

  1. Decide the exact form of your name, address and phone, and use it everywhere.
  2. Search for your old phone number and old address in quotes.
  3. Claim and correct the big listings first: Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, Facebook.
  4. Work through the rest, and check them again after any change.

Questions

What does NAP stand for?

Name, address, phone number.

Does "Street" vs "St." matter?

Hardly. A different phone number or an old address does.

Should I pay for a citation-building service?

Only if it shows you exactly which listings it corrected. Piles of new, low-quality directory listings add little.
