Local SEO tools a small business actually needs

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

The local SEO tools most small businesses need are free: Google Business Profile, Google Search Console, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and PageSpeed Insights. Paid tools earn their cost later, for tracking your map position across your area, monitoring reviews on many sites, and managing directory listings at scale.

The free ones, first

  • Google Business Profile: your listing, reviews, and the Performance view.
  • Google Search Console: which searches show your site, and indexing problems.
  • Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect: the other two big maps.
  • PageSpeed Insights: how fast your pages load on a phone.
  • Geo-grid rank tracking, to see your map position from many points in your area.
  • Review monitoring across Google, Yelp and industry sites.
  • Citation management, to find and fix directory listings in bulk.

Tools don't do the work

Every tool here reports or speeds up a task. None of them writes a service page, replies to a review or fixes an old listing. Pick tools for the work you'll actually keep doing.

Questions

Do I need a paid local SEO tool?

Not to start. The free tools cover most of what a single-location business needs.

What about checking AI answers?

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions customers ask, and keep the answers. Lehvel Observatory does this monthly.

How often should I check rankings?

Monthly is plenty. Daily numbers move for reasons you can't control.
