Product Truth vs a PIM

The short answer

Product Truth vs a PIM isn't a replacement question. A PIM manages product content and sends it to channels. Product Truth is the answer an outside system gets when it asks about a product, with the source and date attached. It reads from the PIM and from the places a PIM usually doesn't reach.

What a PIM is for

A PIM (product information management system) is where a company manages product content: attributes, descriptions, images, categories, and the channel-specific versions it sends to a website, a marketplace or a distributor's portal. Akeneo, Salsify, inriver and Pimcore are examples. In some industries a data service or buying-group content hub does the same job.

It's built for the people who maintain the catalog and the channels that publish it.

What Product Truth is for

Product Truth is the answer an outside system gets when it asks about a product, with the evidence attached. It reads from the PIM, and from the places a PIM usually doesn't reach.

Side by side

  • Main job. PIM: manage and syndicate product content. Product Truth: answer questions about products, with source and date.
  • Who uses it. PIM: catalog and e-commerce teams. Product Truth: AI assistants and agents, the website, the Business Check.
  • Stock and lead time. PIM: usually not; that lives in the ERP. Product Truth: per location, with the time it was read.
  • Cross-references and fitment. PIM: sometimes, as attributes. Product Truth: as stated relations with their source; derived ones are asked, not stated.
  • Who may see a fact. PIM: channel by channel. Product Truth: public, on request or internal, per fact.
  • Is the published page still right? PIM: not its job. Product Truth: checked, comparing what the site, the listings and the AI assistants say against the record.
  • Actions. PIM: none. Product Truth: one request a person answers, a quote or inquiry.

Where they overlap

Both care about attributes, units and documents. If your PIM is well kept, Product Truth reads it as a source and adds the date, the channel and the operational facts around it. If parts of the catalog live in spreadsheets, PDFs or one person's memory, those become sources too, each marked for what it is.

When you don't need either

A business with a few dozen products and no channel partners usually needs a good website and an accurate Business Truth record, not a PIM.

Product Truth matters when products are numerous, technical, sold through several parties, or change status often. Parts, equipment, building products and vehicles all qualify.

Questions

Does Product Truth replace our PIM?

No. They answer different questions. Product Truth reads the PIM as one source and adds dates, stock and what AI assistants actually say.

We don't have a PIM. Can we still have Product Truth?

Yes. Spreadsheets, PDFs, published pages and an ERP export can all be sources, each marked for what it is.

Which one should a small catalog start with?

Neither. A few dozen products with no channel partners usually need a good website and an accurate Business Truth record first.
