Which schema markup testing tool to use

By · 2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Use two free tools. Google's Rich Results Test shows whether a page qualifies for rich results in Google and flags errors in the types Google supports. The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks all schema.org types, including ones Google doesn't use. After launch, Search Console's enhancement reports catch problems across the whole site.

What each schema markup testing tool is for

  • Rich Results Test: "Will Google show stars, FAQs, events or products for this page?"
  • Schema Markup Validator: "Is this valid schema.org, whatever type it is?" It replaced Google's old Structured Data Testing Tool.
  • Search Console enhancements: errors and warnings across every page, over time.

Errors worth fixing first

  • Missing required fields, like startDate on an event.
  • Markup that doesn't match visible text.
  • The same Organization or LocalBusiness block with different details on different pages.

Questions

Do warnings matter?

Warnings are optional fields. Fill them if the information is true and useful.

Can I test code before publishing?

Yes. Both tools accept pasted code as well as URLs.

Does valid schema guarantee rich results?

No. Google decides whether to show them.
