How to check what ChatGPT says about your business
To check what ChatGPT says about your business, open a Temporary Chat or a logged-out browser and ask what a customer would: "best plumber in [town]", "is [your business] open Sundays".

You can't ask or pay ChatGPT to recommend your business. When someone asks it for a roofer nearby, it searches the web and writes from what it finds: your website, your Google listing, directories, reviews. To get recommended, make those sources clear, current and consistent about what you do and where.
When a question needs current or local information, ChatGPT usually runs web searches, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer from them. There's no list of approved businesses behind it.
So the businesses it names tend to be the ones whose details are easy to find and agree with each other. A roofer whose website says "roofing, gutters and skylights in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls", whose Google listing says the same, and whose recent reviews mention skylights, gives it an easy answer.
No. Where ChatGPT shows ads, they're labeled and separate from the answer.
It depends on when the pages it reads are next crawled and searched. There's no fixed timeline, so check again after a few weeks.
It reads what it can find on the web, and review sites are often among the sources it cites. You can see which ones in the sources under the answer.
The mechanics are similar: they read the web and write an answer. Perplexity always shows its sources, which makes it easier to see what it read.

2 min readYou can't edit what ChatGPT says, but wrong information about your business almost always comes from a source it read: an old directory listing, an outdated page on your site, your Google profile.
