Modern website design without chasing trends

By · 2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Modern website design, to a customer, mostly means the site feels quick and clear: it loads fast on a phone, uses real photos instead of stock, has large readable type, and says what you do in the first line. Trendy effects like heavy animation and scroll tricks date fast.

What reads as modern

  • Loads in a couple of seconds on mobile data.
  • Photos of your people, work and place.
  • Big type, short paragraphs, generous spacing.
  • One obvious next step: call, book or get a quote.
  • Current copyright year, current hours, no dead links.

What dates quickly

Autoplay background video, text that flies in as you scroll, carousels on the homepage, and whatever gradient everyone used last year. They look good in a design portfolio and cost you speed on a phone.

The most dated thing on most small business sites

Old information. A 2019 team photo and a service you stopped offering make a site feel older than any design choice.

Questions

Every four or five years, with small updates in between.
