How to search Google reviews for a word or a name

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

To search Google reviews for a word, open the business's reviews on Google Maps and use the review search, or tap one of the topic buttons Google shows above the reviews. It finds reviews mentioning a service, a problem or a staff member's name. Owners can use it to spot patterns that a star rating hides.

How to do it

  1. Open the business on Google Maps and go to Reviews.
  2. Use the search option or tap a topic Google suggests, like "price" or "wait".
  3. Sort by newest to see whether a pattern is recent.

What owners can learn

  • Which staff members customers name, for better or worse.
  • Which service gets praised, and which gets complaints.
  • Whether a problem, like wait times, is getting better or worse.
  • The words customers use, which are the words to use on your website.

Questions

Can I search reviews by the reviewer's name?

You can scan the names shown, but the search looks at review text.

Can I search my competitors' reviews?

Yes. Reviews are public, and they show what customers in your area care about.

Why don't I see a search box?

Google shows it on some profiles and devices, not all. The topic buttons do much the same job.
