SEO for photographers: getting a portfolio found

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

SEO for photographers comes down to two things most portfolios lack: words and speed. Search engines can't see what's in a photo unless you tell them, and huge image files make galleries slow. Give each niche its own page, describe images with real alt text, compress files, and name the places you shoot.

One page per kind of work

Weddings, headshots, newborns, family sessions, commercial and product work each have different clients and searches. A single gallery with everything mixed together ranks for none of them.

Make the images readable

  • Alt text that says what's in the photo: "bride and groom at Stan Hywet Hall in autumn", not "IMG_4471".
  • File names that describe the image.
  • A few sentences on each gallery page about the session or venue.
  • Compressed images, so pages load quickly on a phone.

Places and venues

Couples search for photographers who know their venue. A page or blog post per venue you've shot, with a gallery and notes about the light and the best spots, is some of the most useful content a wedding photographer can publish.

Questions

Is Instagram enough?

It's good for being seen, but search engines read it poorly and you don't control it. Keep your best work on your own site too.

How many images should a gallery have?

A tight selection of your best work. Fewer, stronger images load faster and persuade more.

Do photographers need a Google Business Profile?

Yes, as a service-area business if you travel to clients.
