Trace a wrong AI answer to its source

The short answer

A wrong AI answer about a product or a dealer is a copy of something published somewhere. Tracing it means finding the page, feed or file that carries the same wrong value, identifying who maintains it, and recording the result. Correcting the answer directly is not possible. Correcting its source is.

The answer is a copy

An assistant does not invent a part number or a branch address from nothing. It reproduces, recombines or misreads something it was given. That makes every wrong answer a lead: somewhere a source states the value, or states something close enough to be misread.

The first move is to treat the wrong answer as evidence, not as an incident. Capture it exactly: the question, the assistant, the date, the full answer and any sources it named.

Where wrong values originate

In manufacturer, distributor and dealer data, the same few origins recur.

  • A directory or locator copy that was never updated after a change: a dropped line, a former address, a retired contact.
  • A catalog transcription of a specification: a unit converted wrongly, a nominal dimension read as actual, a revision omitted.
  • A PDF that was superseded but stays indexed, so two revisions of a data sheet are both findable.
  • A marketplace or aggregator listing that joins one party's name to another's identifier.
  • A cross-reference table that asserts a part replaces another without a source.

How to trace it

  1. Search for the exact wrong value, in quotes, across the manufacturer, distributor and dealer sites, the main directories and marketplaces. An identifier or a measurement is easy to find verbatim.
  2. If it appears, note every place, its date and what the page claims as its own source. The earliest dated copy with a stated source is the likely origin.
  3. If it does not appear verbatim, look for the nearest value: a transposed digit, the neighboring model, the previous revision. Misreads leave a recognizable relative.
  4. If the assistant named a source, read that source, not the summary of it.
  5. Compare against the checked record. The question is not what the page says but what is true, who confirmed it and when.

Classify before correcting

The classification decides who acts.

  • A value the company controls and can correct today.
  • A value another party owns in the channel, to be reported with the evidence.
  • A stale copy of a correct upstream value, which resolves when the feed refreshes or is pushed.
  • A source that cannot be traced, recorded as unresolved with the question and the date, and checked again.

Record it

A trace that lives in one person's notes is repeated every time the same answer returns. Record each one: the question, the answer, the origin, the owner, the correction requested, the date it was verified fixed. Over time the record shows which sources generate errors, which parties fix them quickly and which facts are repeatedly wrong, and that is the list that drives the governance of the data.

The comparison against a checked record, rather than against memory, is what measuring AI answer accuracy is for.

Questions

Can a wrong answer be corrected inside the assistant?

Not reliably. The durable correction is at the source the answer was drawn from, followed by a check that the assistant now answers correctly.

Why search for the exact wrong value?

Identifiers and measurements are specific strings. If the same wrong string exists on a page or in a feed, that is a strong candidate for the origin.

What if the wrong value appears in several places?

Use dates and stated sources to find the earliest copy, then treat the others as downstream copies that need the same correction.

Who owns the correction when the error is in another party's data?

The owner of that kind of fact. Report it to them with the evidence, and record the report and the verification date.
