What happened to Google Business Profile messaging?

The short answer

Google Business Profile messaging, the chat button on business listings, was shut down by Google in July 2024. Customers can no longer message you through your profile. You can still show a phone number, website and booking links, and add chat links such as WhatsApp or text. Check that your profile offers a way to reach you that you answer.

What changed

Google ended its Business Messages chat in 2024, and the chat button disappeared from profiles. Any sign or page telling customers to "message us on Google" is now out of date.

What to do now

  1. Make sure your phone number is right and answered.
  2. Add a booking or appointment link if you take bookings online.
  3. Add a WhatsApp or text link if you'd rather get messages.
  4. Remove any "message us on Google" instructions from your site and signage.
