Someone edited my Google Business Profile. What happened?

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

If someone edited your Google Business Profile, it was a member of the public suggesting a change, Google updating details from other sources, or another manager on the profile. Check your profile for updates from Google, reject the wrong ones, and make sure your website and listings show the right details so it doesn't happen again.

Where edits come from

  • Suggestions from the public: "this place is closed on Mondays".
  • Google's own updates, drawn from your website, other sites and user reports.
  • Another person with manager access to the profile.

What to do now

  1. Sign in and look for updates from Google on your profile. Review each one and reject anything wrong.
  2. Check who has access in the profile's managers list and remove anyone who shouldn't be there.
  3. Correct the source Google took the detail from. Often it's your own website or an old directory.

Making it happen less

Keep hours current, including holiday hours; stale hours invite public edits. Keep your website and profile identical on name, address, phone and hours. And look at the profile regularly, because changes don't always come with a notification.

Questions

Can I stop people suggesting edits?

No. You can only review and reject them.

Why did Google change my business category?

Usually because other sources describe you differently. Make your website's description match the category you want.

Google marked my business as closed. What now?

Correct it in the profile straight away, then check your website and directories for anything saying you've closed or moved.
