How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business
You can't ask or pay ChatGPT to recommend your business.

A ChatGPT plugin for a local business is a connection between ChatGPT and the business's own system. With one, ChatGPT can answer from the business's real service list and pass along a quote request. Without one, it reads whatever web pages it finds. OpenAI reviews every plugin before listing it in the Plugin Directory.
OpenAI first shipped ChatGPT plugins in 2023 and shut them down in April 2024. Custom GPTs replaced them, then apps in late 2025. In July 2026 the app directory became the Plugin Directory, and at its developer event that September OpenAI changed how plugins are built, submitted and shown in conversations.
So the word is old and the system is new. If you remember a plugin store from 2023, none of that carried over.
Take a tree service. Someone asks ChatGPT whether it grinds stumps in Lakewood. With a plugin, ChatGPT asks the tree service's server and gets the answer from its actual service list and service area. It can then ask what the tree service would ask on the phone, and send the request on.
Here is the part most posts skip. Nobody installs a tree service's plugin on purpose. A plugin only matters when ChatGPT brings it into a conversation, and OpenAI decides when that happens.
OpenAI has a local-services feature in beta. When someone looks up an eligible business in ChatGPT, the business's card can show a Get Quote button, and the button opens a quote form inside the chat.
It's open to approved partners, by application. The specification is written for a provider that supplies records for many businesses: name, address, phone, website, and where a quote request should go. A single shop is one record in somebody's feed.
Probably not this month. If ChatGPT gives the wrong hours for you today, a plugin doesn't fix that. It read those hours on your website, your Google listing or an old directory page, and it will keep reading them.
Get those sources agreeing first. A plugin built afterward serves correct facts, and the work isn't wasted if OpenAI changes the rules again.
No. A custom GPT is a configured version of ChatGPT. A plugin connects ChatGPT to an outside system through a server. OpenAI has said it plans to move custom GPTs over to plugins.
OpenAI doesn't publish a timeline. Don't plan a launch around an approval date.
Not for services. Plugins may sell physical goods only, with checkout on the seller's own site. A quote request isn't a sale.
No. It's separate from Google search and from your Google Business Profile.
A developer, or a company that builds and submits them. Lehvel does this for local businesses and for agencies with local clients.
