Google Business Profile verification: methods and what goes wrong

2 min read · Updated

The short answer

Google Business Profile verification proves you run the business at the address or service area you entered. Google decides which methods to offer, which may include a phone call or text, email, a recorded video, a live video call, or occasionally a postcard. Match your name, address and category to your signage and website before you start.

Before you start

  • Use your real business name, exactly as on your signage and registration.
  • Enter the address you actually operate from, or hide it if customers don't visit.
  • Pick the category that matches your website's main heading.
  • Have a way to show the business: signage, equipment, a branded vehicle, business documents.

The methods

You don't choose freely; Google shows the options it will accept for your profile. Video verification is now common, and our video verification guide covers what to film. If you're offered a code by phone, text or email, it arrives quickly.

When it fails

  1. Read the reason Google gives, if any.
  2. Fix whatever doesn't match: name, address, category, or the evidence you showed.
  3. Try again with the method offered, rather than creating a new profile.

Questions

How long does verification take?

Codes arrive in minutes. Video reviews can take several days.

Can I verify a service-area business at home?

Yes. Verify with the address, then hide it from the public profile.

Why does my profile need verifying again?

Big edits, like a new name, address or category, can send a profile back for verification.
